ANDERSON COUNTY — Three teachers from Anderson School District One are recipients of the 2010 Palmetto Award for District Social Studies Teachers of Distinction Awards recognizing their exemplary work in teaching social studies in the classroom.

The state award is given to teachers from across the state.

The elementary school winner is Shay Barksdale from West Pelzer Elementary, the middle school winner is Jo Evans from Palmetto Middle, and the high school winner is Maggie Elrod from Wren High.

They were recently recognized by the South Carolina Council for Social Studies at the state Social Studies conference in Myrtle Beach.

The awards are given to teachers annually to elementary and secondary teachers of social studies that have demonstrated exemplary teaching skills.

Jane Harrison, Anderson One’s director of Elementary Education, said, “These teachers are outstanding role models for teachers. They are enthusiastic about their content and they make history come alive for the students.”
