If needed, primary elections are scheduled for July 12, and the primary runoff is scheduled for July 26. The general election will be Aug. 30.
Cooper has held the seat for 21 years, and his last day will be in June at the end of this year’s legislative session.
Last year, Cooper faced opposition during the primary from Joshua Putnam and in the general election from independent candidate Mark Powell and Constitution Party candidate Dave Ballard.
During an interview with the Post, Cooper said he doesn’t believe anyone will file as a Democrat.
“I haven’t had any Democrat opposition since 1992,” he said.
Cooper currently holds the chairman position of the House Ways and Means committee, considered to be one of the most prestigious positions in the state. State Rep. Brian White of Anderson will replace Cooper as chairman of the House Ways and Means.
