Meanwhile, Texas East, from Oakridge Woodlands Area, scored an equally impressive 10-1 win over the Louisiana state champions, District 2 from Hammond, Louisiana.
Tonight at 6 p.m., the host team will play Texas East in the winner’s bracket. The winner of the game can rest on Sunday as the loser faces the winner of the Texas West-Louisiana District 2 elimination game.
The winner of that game would then have to defeat the team in the winners bracket twice in order to advance to the Big League World Series.
Last year Louisiana District 5 defeated Texas East 5-4 in the winner’s bracket finals, but fell to Texas East 5-1 in the rematch. Louisiana District 5 won the championship game 9-7. In the three games total, Texas East scored 16 runs, and Louisiana District 5 scored 15 runs.
In 2009, Texas West came from the losers bracket to face Louisiana District 5 in the finals, and won 4-3. The host team came back to win 12-10 in the championship game, earning the spot in the BLWS.
Louisiana District 5 has won the Southwest Championship every year since the tournament came to Rushton in 2008. They also won the title in 2007, when the tournament was held in Blytheville, Arkansas.
