POWDERSVILLE - The Hurricanes were seeking redemption after falling to Northwestern in their first playoff loss, but the offense did not cooperate in game two.

The Wren High baseball team dropped its second and final playoff game to Northwestern by a score of 8-0 last week, ending the Hurricanes season with something to be desired.

“We knew it was going to be tough playing up there,” said Head Coach Randy Thompson of the rematch with Northwestern. “They’re an experienced team, they have a number of seniors, and we struggled with them last year as well. We knew it was going to be a tough battle, but I’m proud of my kids.”

Thompson says his team simply did not have enough in the end.

“We just kind of ran out of gas,” said Thompson. “It was still a good day for us, and we are going to take away the good things versus how it ended.”

The Hurricanes trailed for the majority of the game, finding no help from their bats when they needed them most.

“We knew Northwestern was a team where we had to limit the number of chances they got,” said Thompson. “We had some things that didn’t go our way, and they capitalized on it. I don’t know if it was us or it was just them being that good. You feel like you have to play perfect against them.”

Thompson says rain delays put a damper on the playoffs by messing with the schedule. The coach says his group could never really find a rhythm.

“It makes it tough,” said Thompson. “We were kind of rolling the dice (with our pitching). The days of rest were cut down. The playoffs are so stressful anyway. Every game is right there on the brink of going either direction. It just makes it really tough.”

The slew of games gave Thompsons player’s minimal time for recovery.

“Any time you play that many games in that many days it’s going to be tough on any pitching staff,” said Thompson. “We played basically five games in five days. It was just tough on the players because we’re not used to playing (like that).”

Win or lose, Thompson says he will remember this season for the group of seniors that he was able to share it with.

“I am very proud of this group of seniors,” said Thompson. “You look at Adam House, Derek Bayne, and Alex Etherton, those guys have always been with us and never fell into that pressure. They did exactly what we needed them to do and it seemed like every time something good happened, those guys were right in the middle of it.”

Thompson says his team also received big boosts from Kyle Morella and Tyler Jackson.

“Tyler Jackson has had an outstanding career for us,” said Thompson. “He’s one of those guys that you put on the mound and you feel like you’re going to have a great opportunity to win.”

“They’re going to be a difficult group to replace,” he said.
