EASLEY—Five Dominican Republic pitchers combined for a 2-hit shut-out as the Dominican Republic defeated Guam 6-0 Sunday night at the J.B. “Red” Owens Recreation Complex.

The Dominican Republic now has a perfect 7-0 record in pool play for the past two years in the Big League World Series (one game last year was postponed due to rain, then not made up due to the game not having any bearing on the semi-finals.

The Dominican Republic will have a rematch against Mexico Tuesday night. Guam, 1-2, will finish its play in the 2009 BLWS with a game against Canada, 1-2, Monday afternoon.

Sunday’s game was originally set to be played on Field One at 4 p.m., but an afternoon shower caused a delay in the Mexico-Germany game, and series officials feared they would not be able to get both games in before the midnight deadline if both were played on Field One. So the Guam-Dominican Republic game was moved to Field Three with a 7:30 p.m. starting time.

The Dominican Republic got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Manuel Tejada singled, then stole second. Gilbert Jimenez singled, allowing Tejada to score.

Winston Contreras hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to give his team a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Edison Flete hit a solo homer for the Dominican Republic. Gilbert Jimenez double, then advanced to third on an error, and scored on an error, giving the Latin American representatives a 4-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, Edison Flete earned a base-on-balls, then Gilbert Gimenez hit a two-run homer to increase the lead to 6-0.
