Environment and E-commerce are the only ones who benefited the most from the pandemic globally. Right when mother nature was healing at a steady pace, e-commerce was boosting.

E-commerce Sales Growth In Various Countries

When covid-19 was at its peak in last years, non-essential shops were closed and we were worried about social distancing that was the time when e-commerce became the first option for shopping lovers and the world saw an incrementally rise in e-commerce sales. However, it affected each country’s e-commerce market differently.

Growth Of Ecommerce Sales During The Pandemic

Now, let’s move further and see how various countries’ e-commerce markets have heightened.

According to the report of UNCTAD, consumers of emerging economies have mostly shifted to online shopping during the pandemic.

  • The Republic of Korea is the country, who have experienced the most expansion in the digital economy. In 2020 the number of internet sales rose from around one in five transactions to more than one in four.
  • In Russia, the volume of online markets grew by 57% compared with the previous year and the audience of digital markets rises up to 10 million people.
  • The number of online transactions also spiked in the UK from 15.8 to 23.3 per cent, as stated in the report of UNCTAD.
  • India’s e-commerce industry accelerated as it gains from the demands created by the COVID-19’s impact. And it is also studied that India’s digital commerce industry will grow 84 per cent to $111 billion by 2024.
  • A survey carried out by the National Confederation Of Shopkeepers (CNDL) and credit reporting agency SPC Brazil shows that 91 per cent of Brazilians have purchased at least once in 2020.
  • As the lockdown ruled in China during the pandemic, big online commerces like Alibaba, Meituan Dianping and others have reported strong earnings.
  • Around 68 per cent population of South Africa did online shopping during the coronavirus pandemic. However, over half of them claimed that they were purchasing groceries and clothes online.
  • The weakest rise was in Switzerland and Germany because more consumers were already indulged in e-commerce.

Now we know about most of the emerging economies’ growth in the e-commerce industry. But the one fact we are still not aware of is that there is also a disparity between genders.

It is indicated that 24 percent of males were frequently shopping online during the pandemic in comparison to 25 percent of women. One in every three men, compared to 25% women, stated that coronavirus was influencing how much they disburse on products.

Conclusion

From the above-mentioned statements, it can be claimed that from being just one of many of the options to our primary method of shopping, the e-commerce industry has developed significantly.

And the credit goes to the coronavirus as the pandemic made it mandatory for all to do online shopping and even for those who formerly chose to buy in-store. By seeing its rapid growth, it seems likely that e-commerce’s rising popularity will persist long after remembrances of the pandemic have faded.
