His journey into electronic music deepened during his time at Leeds Polytechnic in 1977, where he met fellow art student Marc Almond. This encounter marked the genesis of Soft Cell, a partnership that would fuse Almond’s dramatic lyrical delivery and stage presence with Ball’s innovative electronic arrangements.

Soft Cell quickly made a name for themselves in the burgeoning synth-pop scene. Their early EPs and singles, such as “Memorabilia,” showcased their unique blend of raw emotion and synthesized sounds. More recently, Ball and Almond had been working on a new album titled “Danceteria,” inspired by the famed 1980s New York City nightclub. Marc Almond confirmed that the album was completed just days before Ball’s passing, noting Ball’s happiness with the finished work.
